Greater Works than these!
What must we do to see this?
Here is the exact nerve of the modern church’s crisis: Jesus did not operate on earth as an independent, cheating-by-using-His-divinity God.
Philippians 2:7 tells us He emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant. He laid aside the independent display of His divine attributes to live as the ultimate prototype of a fully surrendered man. He cast out demons, healed the sick, and raised the dead not because He was floating around as un-incarnate God, but as a man anointed by the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38).
And because He laid the blueprint, He looked right at us and said:
“He who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do...” John 14:12, NASB.
So why aren’t we seeing it? Why is the Ekklesia largely powerless, ineffective, and acting more like a social club than a governing legislative body?
The problem is not a lack of power; the problem is a total breakdown in government, authorization, and protocol. Here is what is missing when we try to execute the authority He passed to us:
1. We Are Operating Like Citizens Without a Constitution
In a physical government, a citizen can have all the constitutional rights in the world, but if they don’t know the laws, or if they try to enforce laws from a different country, the courts will throw their case out.
· The Problem: The modern church tries to operate in spiritual authority while remaining legally illiterate regarding the Word. We try to use “faith” as a magic wand or a formula rather than executing the exact decrees and statutes of the King. Authority is tied entirely to legality. If you are not speaking the explicit foreign policy of the Throne, heaven doesn’t back your gavel.
2. We Misunderstand What “Authority” (Exousia) Actually Means
We confuse authority with power (dynamis).
· The Problem: A police officer sitting in a squad car has the authority (the legal right, the badge, the backing of the state) to stop a semi-truck going 80 miles an hour. The officer doesn’t have more physical power or muscle mass than the truck, but because he represents the governing jurisdiction of the state, the truck must yield.
· The church is waiting to “feel” powerful before we act, rather than realizing we have been given the badge (exousia). We don’t need our own power; we need to step into the courtroom and pound the gavel with the King’s legal backing. We fail to execute because we are waiting for an emotional or physical sensation of power instead of standing on legal rights.
3. We Are Trying to Govern Without an Ekklesia (We Have Congregations, Not Cabinets)
Jesus did not say, “I will build My Sunday morning attendance.” He said, “I will build My Ekklesia.”
· The Problem: An Ekklesia is a convened legislative assembly. In Greece, the Ekklesia didn’t gather to sing songs and listen to a lecture; they gathered in the town square to make laws, pass budgets, render judicial verdicts, and dictate the culture of the city.
· Today, we have thousands of religious consumers sitting in rows looking at a stage, waiting to be entertained or comforted, rather than a trained cabinet of state officials stepping into their territory to legislate heaven’s will. A collection of consumers cannot govern a territory.
4. We Have Not Fully Subordinated Our Will to the King’s Agenda
Jesus walked in absolute authority because He lived in absolute submission. “I can do nothing on My own initiative... because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (John 5:30).
· The Problem: We want the authority of the King without the submission of an ambassador. We want to use Kingdom authority to fix our personal problems, build our personal comfort zones, or validate our personal agendas. Ambassadors do not represent themselves; they represent the foreign power that sent them. Until our lives are entirely swallowed up by the corporate agenda of the King, our “decrees” carry no diplomatic weight in the spirit realm.
The Bottom Line
The ‘greater works’ Jesus spoke of are not about personal spiritual gymnastics, greater talent, or mere global footprint. They are about the raw, uninterrupted magnitude of the Kingdom operating through an authorized people. Jesus walked the earth as one man in a localized pocket of the Middle East, yet He proved that the spoken word of a surrendered human could command fig trees to wither and mountains to move. He passed that exact administrative authority to His Ekklesia—not so we could manage religious programs, but so that authorized citizens, backed by the full executive power of the Throne, could legally enforce the government of Heaven and disrupt natural laws across the earth.
We aren’t seeing it because we’ve traded our diplomatic gavels for religious crutches. We are trying to run a foreign embassy with the mindset of a charity shelter.
When the church drops the “self-help religion” and steps back into the severe, holy, unapologetic reality of being the ruling Ekklesia of the Most High God, the gates of hell will not be able to hold their ground against us.
